The town of Somerville was founded and settled in the early 1600s as part of the Boston suburb of Charlestown. The population gradually increased over the years due to the amount of land and its connection to the Charlestown Peninsula. The vast green pastures made this Boston suburb desirable for farming and crop growing. Somerville was also home to several Revolutionary War participants and even had some meeting houses and arsenals. As soon as the war ended, the community began to grow and expand into other ventures such as advanced infrastructure and brickmaking. Somerville gained independence from Charlestown in the mid-1800s, and was able to focus on growth of the community, much of which can still be seen today.
